Russian handball history

Russia is the legatee of USSR handball victories, traditions and school. Over 1.5 million people played handball in Soviet times. Handball truly was one of the main team sport in the USSR. A lot of handball institutes, academies, united organizational and methodological centers were formed at that time. Handball schools in Moscow, Leningrad, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Volgograd kept releasing new generations of gifted players. That hard work built formation for the future successes in the competitions.

Modern Russia achievements

Russia possesses an exceptionally rich Soviet handball heritage. The country has changed, but handball academies, institutes, traditions and winning mentality remain the same.

Generally, it makes Russia to be the most successful handball nation at the Olympics. Both Russian men’s and women’s national teams won the total of 7 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The last victory of the Russian women’s national team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and the solid performance of the team at the 2018 EHF EURO in France boosted the fans’ interest to handball in the country. Today over 1 million fans in Russia watch every match of the national teams on TV and in social networks. The match between Russia and Hungary in the Men’s EHF EURO 2020 Qualifiers in Astrakhan set a new record of TV audience with more than 1.3 million fans watching the game.

HANDBALL TOP TOURNAMENTS IN RUSSIA

Russia has also a long history of hosting top handball championships and events. Here are the big handball tournaments held in Russia for the last 5 years:

• 2015 IHF Ordinary and Extraordinary Congress in Sochi
• 2016 Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Astrakhan

• 2018 IHF Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball World Championships in Kazan

ASTRAKHAN

Astrakhan sits astride the Volga north of the Caspian Sea. The city reflects much of the region’s cultural and religious diversity and is often called the triangle of Christ, Mohammed and Buddha. A city of bridges and water channels, Astrakhan is an important river port and the base of a large fishing fleet.

Astrakhan tourism has a clearly defined trend – fishing and hunting, which have already become the brand of the Astrakhan region. At the same time other kinds of tourism are developing, such as cultural and educational tourism, eco-tourism, cruises, business travelling and event tourism.

Handball plays the major role in the city sport life. It is the home for men’s Dinamo Astrakhan and women’s Astrakhanochka handball clubs which raised a lot of Russian handball stars.

Rostov-on-Don

Founded in 1749 it is the largest city in the South of Russia and the center of the South Federal District.

In modern times, Rostov-on-Don has experienced economic growth. Numerous start-up companies have established headquarters in the city, the median income is increasing, and the city is being transformed into a modern, industrial and technology-rich hub.

It provides the residents and the tourists with a number of leisure activities and job opportunities.

In 2018 Rostov-on-Don was one of the cities where the FIFA World Cup was held.

Handball plays an important role in the city life since top European women’s handball club Rostov-Don is based here.

Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by the most ‘European-oriented’ Russian tsar Peter the Great and still regarded as the most European city in Russia. It is the second-largest city after Moscow, a federal city and a former capital of Russia.

Saint Petersburg is situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. It is the most Northern city in the world with more than 1 mln population.

The city Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg is UNESCO World Heritage. The city can be regarded as a museum under the sky. St. Petersburg is Russian cultural capital, important economic, scientific and sports center.

In 2005 Saint Petersburg hosted World Women's Handball Championship. The city is also the home of the Neva handball club, the frequent participant of the European cups.

Moscow is the capital of Russia, its biggest and the most densely populated city. It is also the largest city on the European continent with life running 24/7.

The city is a large transportation hub with 3 international airports, 9 railway terminals and developed city transport infrastructure.

Moscow can be considered the very heart and soul of Russia - and with good cause. Despite its old age, the city is eternally youthful. It is growing and changing rapidly while at the same time managing to remain an essentially Russian city.

Moscow has something for everyone, from historical sights, theaters and museums to restaurants and sports activities.

The city has extensive experience in holding sport festivals. It hosted a number of top-scale sports events including the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

Moscow is the home for the women’s CSKA and men’s Spartak handball clubs.

Best possible accommodation is an integral part of the successful hosting of largescale sports event. The choice of hotels in Russia is various enough: from luxurious hotels up to hotels of an economy class. Four and five star hotels are basically managed by the well-known international companies providing high standard of service and modern facilities as satellite TV, internet-access, restaurants, laundries, meeting rooms, concierge service etc. Each host city has a variety of hotels located within 10 min drive from the arenas. Plenty of rooms will be enough for teams, EHF Officials and Partners, media and guests of Women`s EHF EURO 2024.

Media

The key role of the media in sport promotion is clearly recognisable by all the parties. The OC will do everything possible to make journalists feel comfortable meeting all necessary requirements. Mixed zones, press-conference rooms, accreditation and media centers at each venue will be arranged according to the EHF guidelines. Besides, shuttle service connecting media hotels and the venues will be provided. Special attention will be paid to the arrangement of the media days as an integral part of the event prior to each tournament phase and on the eve of the final. All necessary equipment and facilities as well as catering service will contribute to the comfortable and soothing work of the media representatives.

TRANSPORT

Throughout recent years Russia underwent a big modernization of transport infrastructure. Such a huge work resulted in millions of people freely travelling across the country. A local transport service requested by the participating delegations, EHF Officials and Partners during the Event, can be guaranteed and implemented with no restrictions. 

Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Rostov-on-Don hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup and went through serious reconstruction and improvement of transport infrastructure, accessibility, with new arenas, hotels construction and international airports meeting all modern standards.

All locations could be reached in 3 hours flight from Moscow. Russian capital has 3 international airports and is known as a big international hub. There is also a high-speed train “Sapsan” running between Moscow and Saint Petersburg which delivers passengers to the city center covering 650 kilometers in 4 hours.

Charter flights between host cities could be arranged as well.
